Textile Discharge Screen Printing Ink Formula

Description
Discharge screen printing ink formula is a type of ink used in textile printing that removes (discharges) the dye from the fabric, leaving the original fabric color or allowing for the addition of new color in the discharged area. This ink is particularly useful for printing on dark fabrics because it allows for bright, vibrant designs without the need for a heavy layer of ink, which can make the fabric feel stiff.
Components of Discharge Screen Printing Ink
Component | Function | Chemical Names |
Discharge Agent | Removes dye from the fabric | Sodium hydrosulfite, Zinc formaldehyde sulfoxylate – |
Activator | Activates the discharge agent | Sodium hydroxide, Formaldehyde-free activators – |
Binder | Adheres the ink to the fabric | Acrylic binders, Polyurethane binders – |
Pigments (optional) | Provides new color in discharged areas | Organic and inorganic pigments – Various suppliers |
Thickeners | Adjusts the viscosity of the ink | Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) – |
Softening Agents | Enhances the feel of the printed fabric | Silicone softeners, Non-ionic surfactants – |
Additives | Improves ink performance and stability | Dispersants, Defoamers, Anti-settling agents – |
Water or Solvents | Adjusts the consistency and drying time | Water, Glycol ethers – |
Processing
- Preparation:
- Fabric Selection: Choose the appropriate fabric for discharge printing. Natural fibers like cotton work best.
- Screen Preparation: Create a stencil on the screen for the desired design. A mesh count suitable for the level of detail in the design should be chosen.
- Mixing the Ink:
- Formulation: Mix the discharge ink components according to the desired formulation. Ensure the discharge agent and activator are properly combined with the binder and other additives.
- Pigment Addition: If a colored discharge is desired, mix the appropriate pigments into the discharge ink.
- Printing:
- Application: Load the ink onto the screen and use a squeegee to press the ink through the mesh onto the fabric.
- Multiple Passes: Depending on the fabric and design, multiple passes may be necessary to ensure even application.
- Curing:
- Heat Activation: Cure the printed fabric at a specific temperature (typically around 160°C or 320°F) to activate the discharge agent. This process usually takes 2-3 minutes.
- Steaming (if needed): Some formulations might require steaming at around 96°C (205°F) for a fixed time using saturated steam.
- Post-Processing:
- Washing: After curing, wash the fabric to remove any residual chemicals and unreacted discharge agent.
- Drying: Dry the fabric at room temperature or using a dryer.
Properties of Discharge Screen Printing Ink
