STRONTIUM PERCHLORATE
CHARECTERISTICS
- Strontium perchlorate is a colorless chemical compound.
SOLUBILITY
- Easily soluble in water and alcohol
HAZARDS
- Poisonous in nature and flammable
- Can explode when mixed with other organic compounds
USES
- Acts as an oxidizing agent
- It is also used in many fireworks products.
- Pyrotechnics and Fireworks: Strontium perchlorate is commonly used as a pyrotechnic oxidizer and colorant. When it burns, it produces a bright red flame due to the presence of strontium ions. This compound is responsible for the red color in many fireworks displays and flares.
- Signal Flares: Strontium perchlorate is used in the composition of signal flares, such as those used in emergency situations, military operations, and marine signaling. The red flame produced is highly visible and can be seen from a distance.
- Airbags: In some older airbag systems, strontium perchlorate was used as part of the gas generator composition. When the airbag deploys, the rapid combustion of the strontium perchlorate generates gas to inflate the airbag.
- Analytical Chemistry: Strontium perchlorate can be used in analytical chemistry, particularly in flame photometry and atomic absorption spectroscopy, to determine the presence and concentration of strontium ions in various samples.
- Laboratory Research: It may also find application in laboratory research, where strontium compounds are required for specific experiments or analyses.
