Characteristics: Sodium formate is a quite hygroscopic crystalline powder form.

Having a specific odor like formic acid.

Solubility It is easily soluble in water and glycerin.

It is insoluble in ether and alcohol.

Melting point 253 C

Preparation It is prepared by the reaction of soda caustic and carbon monooxide  undr pressure by heating .

Uses

In the textile industry as mordant agent.

As a reducing agent

In the preparation of formic acid and oxalic acid

as a buffing agent and use in the manufacturing of many organic compounds

it is also used in preparation of sodium dithionite.
